In honor of National Family Caregiving Month, I want to thank the New Mexico Direct Caregivers Coalition for advocating for caregivers in New Mexico. I am a caregiver for my mother, and I understand the dedication it takes to care for your family. I also understand how much support is needed. I introduced a bill called Care Corps to create a national network of trained volunteers who will shore up our caregivers and provide respectful care to those who need it. Volunteers would receive educational benefits to further their careers and help build a health-care workforce. This wouldn’t replace all of the hard working, paid caregivers in our country; this is a model intended to bolster our system of caregiving. Caregivers and their family members deserve a break from the financial, emotional and physical toll of 24-hour caregiving. I will keep working in Congress so caregivers can get the support they need, and their loved ones can live as independently as possible.
